Some of the Los Angeles area projects he has worked on include the rehabilitation of the Hollywood Equitable Building, the conversion of the downtown L.A. Old Bank District buildings into residential lofts, the proposed Museum of Creativity, the Capitol Records’ expansion in Hollywood, the redevelopment of Glendale’s Town Center area, the master plan development for Marion Davies former guest house in Santa Monica, and the implementation plans for Barnsdall Park and the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Hollyhock House. Before venturing into the private sector, Charles was a Senior Planner with the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency and a principal author of the draft Core Area Development Framework for focused growth and development issues through 2010. While President of URBANCITYFOODS, Merrick directed a minority-owned development company, constructing multiple restaurants in Baltimore, Washington, Detroit, and Chicago. Previously, Merrick served as the District of Columbia's Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and the Director of Housing and Community Development and led the formation of public/private partnerships which financed the construction of neighborhood retail centers.
