If we couldnt do the Dubai deal, how can the arabs trust us to protect us from the persians?

Good question.. Ask one of the resident liberal wackos out here...

I'm sure they have an answer to the problem. After all, their likely candidate for 2008, Hillary Clinton, and her buddy Shumer, are responsible for creating this international incident and playing partisan politics with the relationships and national image in the Mid-East.

A couple of my thoughts, having lived in the region back in the 80s...

- Trust does not belong anyplace in this equation.

- The UAE govt lost face in the DPW deal, not money. The US ops could be made up for elsewhere in the world, within short timeframes.
- Losing face is important to respond to, as a formal gesture. Overtime it gets sorted out. Losing money - its lost, never comes back.

- Security interests have nothing to do with either losing face or losing money. That is a different ballgame.

QED : The GCC nations will not shift from alliances with the US on security aspects that are mutually advantageous. There will be short/medium term movement of funds to more desirable places, as a money gesture.
