>>Frankly I'm pretty disgusted.<<

John -

I hope you will let your cable company know how disgusted you are, both with the quality of the box and the interface. I find that writing an actual letter directly to the CEO of the company will often get a surprising amount of attention.

John,

Sounds like u might have a problem with u'r SFA box. Since u most likely got from u'r cable company (MSO), & lease monthly, u should call up or return to get another box.

Alternatively, the problems u incur may be intentional, that is, u'r MSO is so concerned about copyright infringement that it's blocking u'r effort to port a digital signal to recording device such as a TiVo. U'r cable company likely wants u to lease THEIR own DVR/receiver combo & wean u off a free standing TiVo. Who's u'r cable provider, Comcast?

MSOs as well as the DBS (the dish guys) control the content we receive. The also often have a financial interest in the programming they deliver (i.e. DirecTV/Newscorp, Comcast, TimeWarner), & will go all out to protect that content. Unfortunately, this means they will make it difficult or unpleasant for subs to use their own stand alone DVR.

I've know this was coming with my Replay, & it's the biggest issue TiVo faces in its core business.

If u'r disgusted with your cable company, that's understandable. I'm dumped Adelphia in 2000, switched to DirecTV. Been happy ever since, thought a bit frustrated on the HD front right now, but should be remedied in little over a year. U should consider switching to DBS & just getting an HD DVR/receiver. Free standing DVRs are going to have a big problem going forward, as HD content will be strongly protected. JMO.
