that MiniDisc analogy is apt. i had one five years or so ago and really liked it. of course, the first thing i did was junk the stupid DRM software that came with it. there were some workarounds available on the web that let you put whatever on it. as a consumer electronics product it was excellent--one battery lasting more than 50 hours when the early iPod lasted less than 4.

i was reading a Merrill Lynch analysis of the PS3. they put the total bill of materials at $800! that doesn't count assembly, software, packaging, etc. and it DOESN'T include a hard drive.

the most expensive part of the PS3's BOM is that stupid BluRay drive--it alone costs $350, which is $50 more than the "core" Xbox 360. that seems like an enormous gamble on an unproven technology, and adds a ridiculous amount to the price.
