The incredulous, almost sneering response Newman was getting from the interviewer was fun to hear as Newman simply handled him with total aplomb Actually, I don't think the interviewer meant to sneer. I've never thought that Owen Bennett Jones was one of the Beeb's snarkier interviewers (and they have plenty). He was simply incredulous that this gentle, rational and obviously thoughtful person did not accept most of the axioms of the BBC worldview. For example, that we are all marching away from nationalism towards being good citizens of the international community, so it's no problem that 30% of the teenagers in France are Muslim, mostly unassimilated.
