Actually, I don't think the interviewer meant to sneer. I've never thought that Owen Bennett Jones was one of the Beeb's snarkier interviewers (and they have plenty). He was simply incredulous that this gentle, rational and obviously thoughtful person did not accept most of the axioms of the BBC worldview. For example, that we are all marching away from nationalism towards being good citizens of the international community, so it's no problem that 30% of the teenagers in France are Muslim, mostly unassimilated.

The BBC interview of Father Richard Neuhaus shocked me as I listened, I could not believe it was on the BBC World Service.

Just trying to correct the spelling of his name so we can be on the watch for his other articles.

He is a writer for www.firstthings.com, about religion in the US.
