I'm reading a book that covers the history of the concept of private property. The author had a perspective on original sin that I never got in my religion classes. Basically he said that people accepted the "flaw" in human nature that desired to own stuff exclusive of their neighbor because this was the consequence of being thrown out of the Garden of Eden. He referred to it as "After the Fall". In the Garden there was no need for anyone to own anything because there was never any question about there being enough for all. When we got thrown out all of a sudden we had to scrap and fight for survival. Property was just a way to raise one's chances of survival.

The author said this was a pretty predominant theme in economic thought, this looking back to some idyllic past that wasn't really supplanted until Marx and Lenin came up with their ideas that the basic nature of man could be changed using political means. This got people looking forward to some idyllic future where it was thought that people could be changed in such a way that no one felt they had to own anything. Well 70 years and many work camps later it became apparent that owning private property is a pretty basic human desire. One could even call it a basic animal instinct since animals are well known for establishing and protecting their territory.

<<Grace I too would like to commend you on your unpopular thoughts about women. I’ve always said “I don’t wish women to be higher or lower than men. Just Different!” One can be equal and still be different. >>

Oh Grace, isn't that just like a guy, falling for one of the oldest feminine tricks in the book.
