There will always be outlets for national news. What is really sucking wind is local reporting.

This story is indicative I think. The Vikings traded Culpepper this week. The sum total of the Vikings front office communication about this to the local writers was "No comment" - this according to Pat Reuce, an excellent sporto on the Mpls Tribune. The Vikings basically don't talk to the locals anymore because they don't have to. They'll sell out whether they talk or don't. And fans have many other places to read about their club other than the local sports page. Sports teams today only talk to the cable sports channels and nationals.

In the old days sports teams and newspapers were symbiots. One half of this team is dying. And citizens' ability to find out about what's going on in their town is starting to suffer.
