I think most of us will admit that even a documentary is not going to tell the whole truth. Even the non-fiction history books are usually told from the side of the winner- although now we occasionally see them told from the POV of the oppressed, or from some member of a group which thinks it is oppressed- and (surprise surprise) everyone seems to have an axe to grind, and no one seems reliable. How "laughable" the POV expressed is depends on how much it varies from our prejudices.
