The Taliban has just been removed from Kabul. They and the regional warlords control the countryside. Puppet Karzai cannot move around anywhere without US soldiers guarding him. The pipeline cannot be protected by the meager number of US soldiers in Afghanistan. And the air forces cannot attack the insurgents when they are near the pipelines as that would mean further damage to the pipeline. The insurgents have to be engaged on the ground by troops and there are not enough US troops there.
