Without ever having read the Scientology book, I always figure he had written it as a joke, or at least as an experiment to see exactly how much cr*p people would buy into

I always figured he came up with the stuff while drunk/drugged, and either didn't have the wisdom to realize it was the haze talking, or it sounded cool enough to sell.

The Dianetics/Scientology books take a standard cult introduction path: they introduce you to material that sounds reasonable enough, and slowly introduce you to more radical ideas as you get hooked. The tip off is: pay me for enlightenment. And the Church of Scientology gets paid handsomely.
