Isn't the tradition* of slavery older than the tradition of marriage?

Slavery isn't a core, universal human "tradition". Marriage is the universal human mechanism for legitimizing sexual relations between adults, legitimizing children into a social network of kinship and class, and socializing children into the culture. It is, in short, the core means of perpetuating civilization.

Derek

EDIT: The above is why the great Socialist thinkers of the 19th and early 20th Century outlined destruction of the family as a necessary condition to establishment of Socialism. The family unit is the mechanism of perpetuating the culture. Destroy the family and you destroy the culture.

Apples and oranges, IG. One is coerced. The other isn't. I think losing it is a terrible thing. But this is a discussion that could go on forever with no agreement.

My impression of the results of the breakup of the family by welfare the last 40 years is proof enough that it is a bad way to go.
