Isn't the tradition of slavery older than the tradition of marriage?* Slavery isn't a core, universal human "tradition". Marriage is the universal human mechanism for legitimizing sexual relations between adults, legitimizing children into a social network of kinship and class, and socializing children into the culture. It is, in short, the core means of perpetuating civilization. Derek EDIT: The above is why the great Socialist thinkers of the 19th and early 20th Century outlined destruction of the family as a necessary condition to establishment of Socialism. The family unit is the mechanism of perpetuating the culture. Destroy the family and you destroy the culture.
