I think the people who backed him thought he'd be an easily influenced, malleable President, easily controlled and directed by his smarter aides, Cheney, Rummy and the more experienced hands like Colin Powell.

No one could have predicted 9/11, and the instant power that would hand him. Power that Rove would seize for political purposes, and all the other forces in the admin would all jump behind, for their own reasons, to twist to invade Iraq.

Unfortunately, when you make an idiot President, he's PRESIDENT - there isn't some secret contract that forces him to tow the line. Once you've made a substandard human with boderline personality issues President, you're STUCK with him.

I'll bet some of the smarter old hands who promoted and helped to elect him now wishes they'd picked another guy, or even lost to Gore or Kerry. Probably including his own father!
