Please be serious.
That is absurd.

Well, you left out the insurances groups: My health insurance is up double digits every year and I pay 100% of the premium for my family. I live in Florida and my homeowner's insurances have skyrocketed over the last several years. Auto insurance has been the tamest, but still rising with no incidents in the past 10 years.

I am moving, so my property taxes are quadrupling due (in no small measure) to housing price appreciation (inflation).

The services industry charges more because they have to pass on their higher charges. I could shop around more and perhaps get the lower bidder, but then I give up on the quality and I'm not prepared to do that when I don't have to.

We eat out often and the prices at our favorite restaurants have gone up at least 30% in the last couple of years.

Mish, you may enjoy living frugally and that's just great. I am quite frugal in many things myself. However, I don't think inflation is defined by the cost comparisons of only the frugal.

All-in-all, I would say my personal experience with inflation has been somewhere between 8-11% per annum. The impacts for increase have come mostly from the insurances and energy. The declines in electronics are only sporadically experienced in my household as the computers last for years and it is an event when we ever have to buy a new TV. We believe in buying fairly young used cars (3 years old and low mileage) and then owning them for quite a few years, so any savings (hedonic or otherwise) in the automobile arena are only experienced by us maybe once a decade or so.

In the house we just bought, we are doing extensive renovation. I can attest to the fact that the service industry is definitely more expensive than it was several years ago: painters, roofers, plumbers, countertop installers, carpeting, etc., etc.

Can you name any services that have gone down in your experience?

Timba

OT -- My inflation experience is identical to yours, and I live in Florida. I track all our household expenses every year. They increased LESS than the published CPI in the last few years.
