I am a supporter of public funded (but privately, competitively delivered) education.

I don't think 100% publicly funded health care can be made workable (i.e. with denial of the right to buy health care). I don't have an answer that solves all the problems, but I at least would like to see outcome-based competition between hospitals (e.g., give the hospital with the best improvement in outcomes a 10% across-the-board salary bonus).

Any product or service delivered for free will be subject to artificially inflated demand, but that is especially true for health care because there is no limit to how much health people want. It is therefor simply impossible for a public system to fill demand. It can't happen.

We all die, and it isn't worth destroying the economy trying to delay that by a few years. In addition, most serious disease is largely self-inflicted; why should one's neighbours subsidize unhealthy behaviour? I often feel that the public system should be limited to palliative care and a certain basic curative care, but really big (e.g., >$100K/y) expenses should be paid for privately. Other Canadians don't owe me the expenses of a heart transplant (they don't owe me so much as an aspirin, but I'm flexible).

On another front, when I'm on my deathbed, I will want every possible remedy regardless of how much it costs. If the state can't afford it, should I be denied the right to buy it for myself?
