Hawk, I don't know much about the many flavours of Islamic Jihad. There are something like a billion Moslems and I suppose something like 1% would fit into the Islamic Jihad category in some form or another, active, inactive, wannabe, supporter.

Islam, from my experience and reading, is like Christianity. Throughout it's history it has consisted of primarily converts, coerced or voluntary, who often include their previous religious beliefs into their new religious beliefs. Thus, outside of Saudi Arabia and the other 4 primary schools of Islamic thought, Islam has been flavored with Eastern Mysticism and pacifism. Thus, it's not fair to say that all muslims share the militant views of the limited Takfirists and other religious zealots who are unable to accept modern philosophical influences in the faith.

And that tone is often set by Saudi Arabia, where the Royal Family, to their limited credit, has recognized that they have to be tolerant of other Islamic sects. Of course, it helps that they have a significant financial and political benefit from being seen as the guardians of the faith and holy sites.

But they primarily follow the Hanbali school of Islam, the most conservative, from which the Wahabbist was founded. Egypt is another major center of Islamic thought, with the Maliki school:

Here's a summary of the different schools of Islam.

But it's interesting that you bring up the statistical aspect of the Islamo-Fascists. They are a small percentage of the overall Muslim population, but they are the most extreme and their target is to overthrow the Saudis and assert control over the global tone of Islam. From Mecca and Medina, and released from the restrictions the Saudi Royals place upon their internal religious activities, they would be in a prime position to inject their militant ideologies into all of the Muslims who are required to complete the Hadj to Mecca.

And even 1% of 1 Billion people equates to 10 million potential Jihadists, a number of some significance.

But what concerns me is that 40% of the Muslim world is under 20 years of age, a very impressionable age. Thus, it's imperative that the Islamo-Fascists be seen by the Muslim world in their true light. Namely, that not only are they willing to kill infidels from the West, but also fellow muslims, in order to achieve their end. And I think this is being accomplished in Iraq.

I just wish that the Bush administration was pushing this point within their international "propaganda" effort. To state OVER AND OVER AGAIN to the muslim world that we have no problem with the peaceful aspects of any faith, including Christianity, but that the Islamo-Fascists are "ungodly" because they are willing to kill innocent Muslims who they might judge to be infidels.

And we should emphasize the fact that the Afghani and Iraqi people were able to defeat the Islamo-Fascists, with the assistance of the US, and that obviously god is not "favoring" the Islamo-Fascists, but rather is punishing them for their wickedness and willingess to commit murder against Muslims.

This, above all things, will make the majority of muslims recogize that their religion is being hijacked by these bastards and cause them to provide inform and resist the I-F groups.

The very fact that Bin Laden, Zarqawi, and Zawahiri have had to spend their lives in hiding could be presented as indicative that Allah has "abandoned them" and made them outlaws because of their crimes.

These are tactics that our I/O operations SHOULD be making use of, but to date, have not. If you want to defeat the Islamo-Fascists, you have to get into their minds and the minds of those who might be susceptible to their Ideology.
