Not the same markets. That's why Airbus already has a project competing head on with the 7E7, forgot the model number though.

Germany will only have 3 airports ready for the A380. Looking at it from the side, the somewhat short tail section already gives a hint that in years to come they will have a stretch version coming out as well.
Great for point to point transportation of a LOT of passengers.
Nothing for small airports with limited passenger potential. Nothing for SouthWest.

"Seeing that gives me second thoughts, maybe those French and Germans against all odds do get their act together at the end of the day?"

Airbus makes fine airplanes. It will be interesting to see which does better, the A380 or the 7E7. The A380 has the problem that there are not that many airports that can take it. And those need to be modified. The 7E7 has similar costs per passenger mile, and only a slightly shorter range. So who knows?

There are two different theories between the two different planes. Airbus thinks hubs will continue to play an important role in airline service; hence the large plane with the slightly longer range........while Boeing thinks that hubs have become passé and overcrowded, and frustrated airline passengers prefer to fly direct to their destination as much as possible.

BTW the 7E7 is now called the 787 Dreamliner. Some interesting features: greater humidification in the cabin as well as better air; a ceiling that changes color with the sky and the rising and setting of the sun; and windows that go opaque at the flick of a switch. <g>
