Here's treason:
"Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court."

The English kings abused the charge so much that the founders wrote its definition into the constitution so it couldn't be abused here.

Now the courts have held that saying the US shouldn't be in a war is free speech and does not meet the "adhering to their enemies" standard. OOH, going to their country and encouraging theit ack-ack gunners to shoot down American planes does.

The other problem is that "2 witness" requirement. Often that can't be met.

Kerry was probably not guilty of treason. Other matters, probably, but not treason.
