How expensive can it be to configure and provide agents with e-mail accounts?

Unbelievable!

"As ridiculous as this might sound, we have real money issues right now, and the government is reluctant to give all agents and analysts dot-gov accounts," Mark Mershon said when asked about the gap at a New York Daily News editorial board meeting

That's a crock of shite. The government must use Exchange or another mail server that requires Client Access Licenses. Read: ripoff. Here's a recipe for instant cost savings: use Sendmail and ditch Exchange! Free, unlimited email addies for all agents, voila!

Reminds me of right after 9/11. I tried to send an email to the FBI and it was not possible. Had to call them on the phone! Waste some poor agent's time. He was nice about it.

A few months later they did upgrade but you had to access their computer crimes network. For example, they had a bunch of head shots of men wanted for questioning, and the link was on the computer crimes website.

But, in fairness, this is the price we pay because the public wants to eliminate waste and fraud. They have to jump through unbelievable hoops instead. Which seems like waste (but not fraud) to me, BWDIK?
