Manchester's book was brutally honest. He may have filled in some blanks in his own experience with generalized narrative, but the personal impact of his first kill was unforgettable. Shoup was Commandant when I was trying to get into the Marines. I never made it, owing to my poor hearing. Have you read "Coral and Brass" by Gen. H. M. (Howlin' Mad) Smith? I remember as a kid looking at a book called "The Old Breed" owned by my friend's Dad, Bud Moore. It was a sort of year book of the First Marine Division that he was in when he landed at Peleliu.
