Their interest in Submarines came from the fact that my son's outfit was in anti submarines. He was one of a crew of 4 flying S3 aircraft, chasing subs. He had several thousand hours of flight time in his 20 years.

Now, the S3 is mostly used for mid-air refueling as the sub threat isn't great these days. Something he told me years ago was the real sub threat is for some rogue nation buying an old Russian submarine and attempting to float it up the Hudson River with a home made atomic bomb aboard. The Navy still keeps watch over the world's submarines, but not with the S3.
