but real estate taxes can be high because of the assessment.

Thank you. I thought as much.

I was wrong on that one. I was thinking in terms of my apt. building........that can be reassessed every three years. However, residential units, 4 units or less, are subject to an assessment raise of only 2% per year. Since housing prices in CA have jumped as much as 20% in one year, 2% is a drop in the bucket and accounts for why CA is in such a financial mess.

en.wikipedia.org

However to put that into perspective, the taxes on a $500,000 house are $6250 per year......probably less than what you pay on your townhouse.

The tax rates in Fairfax County are 1% ($1 per $100 of assessed value) with a planned reduction to .93%.

1% of $500k is $5k. So a $500,000 house would be taxed $5000 per year, and my townhouse gets taxed less than that.

Yes, but in Fairfax County if I understand the website you posted, certain fees can be added to the bill....such as leaf or refuse collection....probably schools. In CA the 1.25% is all that can be collected..........everything has to be paid from that set amount.
