As I haven't lived in the U.K. recently, I don't have a very good feel to what degree they play with the numbers. One thing I do know is that Denis Healey never was known to mince words though he delivered his zingers with great wit (I lived in England during his era).

For lack of a better source, I take his endorsement of Brown very seriously. However, the U.K.'s gold sales under Brown as a chancellor were clearly not very smart. However, gold sales by many countries were driven by many factors and clearly not just profits.
