OT: Interestingly, here in sunny CA solar is a growing trend with 50% rebates provided against install costs. However, PG & E has a sweet deal in that we can run our meter backwards with the power we produce from home installed solar...However, again, we cannot use a stand alone system (Mother CA will not support independence thru the 50% rebate)

We must remain interconnected to the grid and at the end of the year if we have produced more power than we used it all goes back to zero!! If the grid goes down we go down to. No credits etc.

Now here is a real kicker. The installer gets the 50% from the gov't direct, they sell you this idea thru "we will do all of the paper work, permits, site plans etc. Somewhere they are getting the lions share of the profit either on install costs (labor) or parts. Photo cells are getting cheaper and cheaper...hmmmmmm The average system installed for a 1800 sq. foot house is 22 to 30k...I can buy a lot of power for that kind of money..they say payback is 10 years.
