John,
I dont agree with your conclusions about what we should do. I am very conflicted--use of nukes on our part crosses a line that has not been crossed since 1945 and then we didnt even know there was a line.
What i would like to comment on is the israelis. Going back to cold war days, israel made it clear to the soviets that if moscow aided and abetted the arabs and particularly if they introduced nukes into the area, the israelis were fully able to hit moscow. That gave the russians something to think about. Israel wont go down alone. mike

Should the Iranians put a nuke into Israel, there won't be time for Washington to dissuade Israel from hitting back. It will happen very fast
The reality is, is that I think defense is stronger then offense now. The Israelis just have to bolt a nuke on the tip of a missle and they have an ABM system. The US is experimenting with a missle on an F-16 capable of going after inbounds. A couple on strip alert in Iraq could stop it all before Israel gets hit.
The Israeli sub force is conventional powered and will have problems as a deterent force. Moscow was/is designed to sop up nukes. The entire British deterent force was needed to reliably take out Moscow during the cold war. Makes more sense for Israel to hit everything else south of Moscow. That would really hurt.

Oh, I have NO doubt that the US would try to dissuade Israel from a massive response. BUT I strongly suspect that if there is an attack by Iran, the second that happens, it would be too late for anything other than a preplanned response by Israel.
