We spoke briefly in a PM about the greatness exemplified by Socrates. I recall something about him throwing Alcibiades (a great man in his own right) in a wrestling match. This would argue that greatness may speak to the physical as well as the mental or spiritual. It is hardly doubtful that Socrates was a hardy and physical man...but the idea of him throwing Alcibiades intrigues me and I so wish I could find or remember it. Of course, you know that Alcibiades was noted for his strength and his skill (not only his lisp!). That Socrates could have mastered him in this would be quite incredible.

I don't know where I read this. It was some time ago. I cannot find it on the internet--at least I've not found it yet. If you come across a reference in any of the literature on Alcibiades would you let me know...thanks.

Edit: I don't think "wrestling match" is accurate. I think Socrates used the physical as part of the "Socratic Method"--but ACTUALLY took him on. It was probably in a Plato Text but there are no search engines on physical books in a private home <g>. It may have been a Socratic question but I believe they actually wrestled. I think DAK may be right...I may be a fossil...
