Alternative Energy Storage System to Revolutionize Backup Power for Wireless Cell Sites
Thursday April 6, 2:26 pm ET

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 2006--Magnetek, Inc. (NYSE:MAG - News), a leading developer of power conversion, alternative energy and utility grid management systems, and VRB Power Systems Inc. (TSX VENTURE:VRB - News), a leading producer of energy storage systems, today announced the unveiling of a revolutionary 5kW Energy Storage System (ESS). Co-developed by Magnetek and VRB Power, the 5kW ESS is an alternative to traditional lead-acid battery backup systems. On display in Booth 4369 at the CTIA Wireless 2006 show in Las Vegas, Nevada (April 5-7), the ESS system provides cost effective, reliable, environmentally friendly, virtually maintenance-free backup power for wireless cell sites and other telecommunications systems.

Based on VRB Power's patented Vanadium Redox Battery Energy Storage System ("VRB-ESS"), the system is available in 5KW or 10KW configurations. The system is comprised of an electrolyte storage tank containing a vanadium-based electrolyte supplied to a regenerative cell stack that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. A chemical reaction in the flow-cell stacks creates a current that is collected by electrodes and made available to an external circuit. This reaction is reversible allowing recharging of the DC power modules.

The ESS is well suited for a variety of applications. Virtually maintenance-free, it affords substantially lower cost of ownership than lead-acid battery-based systems and provides unprecedented security-of-supply to meet the energy needs of critical telecommunications facilities. In addition, the system's small footprint is a bonus for cell sites where space is limited.

With its precise state-of-charge monitoring and extremely rapid recharge rate, the ESS system is ready to perform whenever an AC utility grid outage occurs, and when power is restored it is back on duty faster than any other backup system available. Environmentally friendly and competitively priced, the ESS unit is the system of choice where high-reliability power is needed. As a "green" technology, the ESS has negligible ecological impact and is unlike most other conventional energy storage systems that rely on toxic substances such as lead or cadmium.

Other power products and systems on display in Booth 4369 at CTIA Wireless 2006 include Magnetek's DC Power Site Support system, Zone 4 Certified Battery Backup system, and other cell-site enclosures and DC power solutions.

About VRB Power

Headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, VRB Power Systems Inc. is an energy storage technology developer, manufacturer and systems integrator utilizing the patented VRB Energy Storage System ("VRB-ESS"(TM)). VRB-ESS is a long life, cost effective, low maintenance, efficient technology that allows for the scalability of power and storage capacity independently. It is focused towards stationary applications and can economically store and supply large amounts of electricity on demand. The VRB-ESS is particularly beneficial to renewable energy providers, utilities and end users through the ability to "inventory" electricity, allowing for the optimal match of supply and demand, as well as providing improved power quality, reliability and energy efficiency.
