But the term mob rule suggests nihilism, which Athenian democracy was not.

Nihilism? It's interesting that this contemporary concept well characterizes what destroyed the Age of Pericles and Pericles. When you have nihilism you have pestilence, because the state is literally under mob control, and thereby nothing critical to maintenance of the state gets done.

In order to be eligible to vote you had to be an Athenian born freeman.

So much for "pure" democracy.

You are a liberal then.

I am a liberal pre-1963, no question about it. Since then liberal has come to mean nihilistic.

Aside from the philosophical definition, nihilism means

2. Rejection of all distinctions in moral or religious value and a willingness to repudiate all previous theories of morality or religious belief.

3. The belief that destruction of existing political or social institutions is necessary for future improvement.

I don't see the close connection to Spartan government though. For one thing, Sparta had no judicial branch.

It actually did, but it wasn't structured in a way that the modern observer would identify as such. The reason: laws were enforced harshly.

As you move across the spectrum toward pure democracy, economies, arts and trade seem to flourish. Every form involves trade offs.

The liberals have pretty much traded off the US as we move to "pure" democracy, mob rule. This will bring about a move back to autocracy.
