I think you have to consider the long run. The world has a long-term problem with the Islamic world. That civilization has been sick for centuries - and it didn't matter until recently because of their weakness. Now world civilization is dependent upon a commodity the Islamic world has a major share of. That situation will not change anytime soon. The idea we can become independent of ME o&g is a pipedream. Even were we to not import a drop from there, the market for energy is global and o&g is fungible so shortages anywhere impact on the volume available and price everywhere. Plus, the spread of technology (even Muslim countries can develop nuclear and other WMD's now) and increased global communications and travel (millions of Muslims now are able to live or visit outside their homelands) gives the Islamic world's crazies opportunity to do much more harm than in the past. So the sick Islamic civilization is a problem we need to deal with. It can only be changed by a LONG process of transformation. Remember the cold war began under Truman and ended under Reagan/Bush. Bush will be remembered as the one who started dealing with the situation (like Truman did the conflict with global communism). Domestically, I'm thinking now the nomination of new young conservative SC justices will have the most impact. Economically, I think we will have some tough challenges in the coming decades but by then Bush will not be President. And he will not be associated with those except for his Presidency being listed as one of a line who failed to get the country to get its entitlements under control.
