>>We'd be back to the state of things in the 1930s that my mother used to describe to me -- we lived in the Arizona countryside then -- when someone would tap on the rear door and say, "Have you got any work? I don't want to be paid, I just want to eat." And she'd say, "Sure, we'll find something for you to do and give you eggs and potatoes."<<

For a little more background on this (and Depression-era life in general), there's a decent PBS documentary that's out on DVD now. It's "American Experience: Riding the Rails" and goes into the whole phenomenon of panhandling, riding the rails and the hobo lifestyle in general. Soon to come to a community near you!<G?>
