>>>We will either explode into stagflation or tip over the precipice into deflation.<<<

Why can't we slog along sideways???

What will induce a crisis???

If you told me a vast quantity of babyboomers moving from feeding the federal beast into feeding off the federal beast as they retire, I would agree. That won't happen for a while.

If you told me $100 crude, I would agree. We will have that, but not for a while.

Bird flu???

"We will either explode into stagflation or tip over the precipice into deflation"

I've made up my mind it will be stagflation. All the signs point to it. Copper, gold and strengthening stock market's worldwide this year confirms it. Had my doubts for a couple of years as apparently you did as well.. What could derail it? A rapid backup in longterm rates or stupid gov't policies that quicken the housing downturn and turn it into an outright collapse. As Bush seems on course for borrowing, continuing wars and taxes cuts we can't afford and allowing Congress to spend like a drunken sailor I doubt that happens. I also doubt China or Japan just dumps treasuries in rapid fashion as they need the US consumer in the game even more than we need them manufacturing stuff dirt cheap..
