Could it be because a democracy in Afghanistan, Iraq or any of the other majority Muslim countries would, far from protecting the "God-given rights" you trumpet, destroy those rights?

Listen, there are shi'ites and sunnis living in Afghanistan. Each consider one another to be usurpers to the "true message" of Islam. Thus, under the Koran, if a Sunni becomes a Shi'a, then he's an apostate in the eyes of many other Sunnis.. It's vice versa from the Shi'a view.

So it's a decision of what one side believes is their "god-given right" versus someone else's impression of THEIRS...

Obviously, the role of government amongst a diverse population is to create an political and social atmosphere where one person's "GGR" is not permitted to infringe on anothers, as they perceive it.

If we continue to follow your dysfunctional logic then those who believe they have the "GGR" to kill all Canyon Dwellers are going to come into direct confrontation with people like yourself, right?

Hell, you might believe you have the right to kill all "flatlanders", for all I know.

Are you going to ask the government to step in and protect your right to live where you want? Will you promote the creation of police and security system to protect your rights, while also protecting the rights of the flatlanders??

It's clear that there is a fair amount of intolerance amongst the extremists on all sides. And it is from this intolerance that they derive their power to dominate and intimidate not only their own religious members, but also those of rival faiths/creeds.

Thus the imperative need of a governmental system that values the beliefs of all people and creates a system where differences can be resolved non-violently, or via a system of laws that are acceptable to both parties. To create a system where people focus MORE on what they have in common, rather than where they differ.

If we accept your view that tolerant and moderate people don't have the "right" to interfere and confront intolerance or socio-pathic behavior, then we'd all be relegated to defending ourselves upon our doorsteps. Because our neighbors would all take the attitude you have that they don't have a right to interfere.

Children and Wives would be beaten within.. Men would rape, maim, and kill.. Slave and child labor would flourish.. And every form of evil would be tolerated all because people like you say we don't have a right to impose a civilized governmental system upon others to promote COMMON INALIENABLE RIGHTS.

Too bad so many have to die while you and Bush keep talking childish foolishness. Ed

No Ed... you avoid the question of how many people are going to die if we do nothing...

And is this how you feel about ghettos within our own society? That we don't have a right to send the police (or god forbid, the national guard) into a city to restore order when the gangs take over??

And I can imagine you wouldn't want to have us risking our lives to help those people in the midst of a natural disaster like Katrina.
