Zone Chefs in the soup over mob scam charges

BY GREG B. SMITH and ADAM NICHOLS
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

A celebrity-endorsed diet service used by thousands of New Yorkers was really a cover operation to hide fat profits made through organized crime, sources told the Daily News yesterday.
Some of the owners of Zone Chefs - which counts Kevin Costner and Liza Minnelli among its famous customers - were involved in a stock market scam controlled by the Colombo crime family, according to court documents.

Ties between the Madison Ave. firm and the mob were revealed Thursday when cops swooped in on an operation to sell penny stocks at inflated prices.

Among the 10 suspects arrested was Zone Chefs' president, Arthur Gunning, who allegedly beat a broker to keep him in line.

Legal papers and sources close to the investigation say other suspects in the stock scam also had links to Zone Chefs, including ultraviolent Colombo soldier Craig Marino, who has "F--- the Police" tattooed across his chest.

Federal prosecutors say Marino was caught on a wiretap admitting an ownership stake in the business, which delivers meals to dieters.

Robert Podlog, identified by authorities as being linked to both the Colombo family and Russian organized crime, also has a stake, legal papers say.

"[A witness] has advised that Podlog and Craig Marino are silent owners of the business," the documents state.

The arrests followed a probe into the "pump and dump" stock scam, which used boiler-room brokerage firms secretly controlled by the Colombo family and soaked investors for $20 million, authorities said.

Recalcitrant brokers were kept in line with violence, prosecutors charge. In one incident, Gunning hit a stockbroker who threatened to leave the operation with a golf club while Podlog stabbed the man in the head, prosecutors said.

Calls to Zone Chefs' attorney were not returned.

Representatives for many of the celebrities who provided testimonials on the company's Web site declined to comment.

BALDWIN RAGES AT HANNITY

By JOHN MAINELLI

March 28, 2006 -- ACTOR Alec Baldwin stormed out of WABC's talk-radio studios Sunday night after a vicious verbal battle with Sean Hannity.
The activist actor, who was road-testing his own potential talk show, called Hannity a "no-talent whore" and an "incredibly ignorant boob from Long Island.

Hannity called Baldwin - a favorite punching-bag for conservatives - on the air just as he was beginning his show, and that's when the fur started to fly.

"At first I thought this was a joke," Baldwin told his co-host, Brian Whitman.

Hannity, furious that Baldwin allegedly broke a promise to appear on his show before Whitman's, wasted no time ripping into the liberal activist.

"Welcome to WABC, considering you were supposed to come on my program last week and you didn't show. What happened?" Hannity demanded.

"Why would I want to come on with a no-talent, former-construction-worker hack like you?" Baldwin answered.

"Are you the reckless, third-rate Hollywood actor who said our vice-president, while we're at war, is a terrorist? Are you the guy?" Hannity asked.

"No wonder you didn't come on my program and defend it, you gutless coward."

Baldwin, who refused to answer pointed questions about several political statements, told Hannity he had no problem appearing with Hannity's Fox News Channel colleague, Bill O'Reilly.

"Now, O'Reilly's show I did because O'Reilly has talent," Baldwin said, falling silent.

"I challenge you [to] come on my program, to say on my program that our president is a mass murderer. You don't have the courage," Hannity said.

"You won't talk to Sean?" Whitman pleaded.

"What's the point? What's there to say? Let's do to Sean what Sean would do to a caller. Sean, are you done, honey? Best of luck, Sean, you no-talent whore," Baldwin taunted.

"Coward," Hannity responded.

The fiery exchange continued until WABC's yappy Mark Levin, who'd also called in, asked Baldwin why ex-wife Kim Basinger is "so p--ed off at you."

At that point Baldwin bolted from the studio, cutting his planned two-hour audition in half.

Alec Baldwin v. Sean Hannity in Radio Donnybrook

Hollywood liberal Alec Baldwin stormed out of an in-studio radio interview Sunday night after he was confronted on the phone by radio hosts Sean Hannity and Mark Levin.

Baldwin was 30 minutes into a planned two-hour-plus sitdown with WABC Radio's Brian Whitman when Hannity called in.

The fireworks commenced almost immediately.

HANNITY: Alec, I wanted to give you an official WABC welcome considering you were supposed to come on my program last week and you didn't show up. What happened?

BALDWIN: No, I wasn't supposed to come on your program, Sean Hannity.

HANNITY: No, actually you were supposed to come on the program because a deal was made with your agent that if you were going to come on with Brian, first you'd come on with me.

BALDWIN: I wouldn't dream of coming on your program, Sean Hannity. I'm here with Brian. I'm here with a really talented broadcaster.

HANNITY: [Crosstalk] that you are, you don't tell the truth.

BALDWIN: Why would I want to come on the show with a no-talent, former construction worker hack like you?

HANNITY: Are you the guy that said of our vice president, while we're at war, while we're leading troops in harm's way - are you the reckless, third-rate Hollywood actor who said that Dick Cheney is a terrorist? Are you the guy . . .

BALDWIN: Yes I am.

HANNITY: ... who said to stone Henry Hyde to death? Are you the guy who said our president is a CIA mass murderer? I wanted you to come on the program and defend that, you gutless coward.

BALDWIN: At first I thought this was a joke. But you can hear all the acid venom spewing hatred. It is Sean Hannity. [END EXCERPT]

The exchange got even hotter when Mark Levin joined in.

LEVIN: We've only just begun - are you 40 or 50 pounds overweight now?

WHITMAN: Oh, C'mon now . . . .

HANNITY: Once and for all you need to be challenged. You want to call our vice president a terrorist - fine. You want to talk about stoning people to death, say it on my program. If you want to be irresponsible and call our president a mass murderer while he's at war leading troops in harm's way ...

BALDWIN: And what are you gonna do about it, Sean Hannity?

HANNITY: You don't have the courage to answer questions.

BALDWIN: And what are you gonna do? And what are you going to do about it, Sean Hannity. If I come on your program, what are you going to do?

LEVIN: He's going to show that you have a two digit IQ - that's what he's gonna do.

BALWIN: What are you going to do?

LEVIN: I just told you - you've got a two digit IQ.

BALDWIN: And who's that - who's your little cabin boy there with you.

LEVIN: I'm not a cabin boy, butt-boy.

BALDWIN: What are you doing there, cabin boy? ... I now dub you Sean Hannity's cabin boy.

LEVIN: And you know what you are? You're "Brokeback" Alec. [END EXCERPT]

The confrontation continued to spiral out of control, with Whitman intermittently trying to make peace and Baldwin repeatedly urging him to move on to other callers.

BALDWIN: Listen, Sean - you incredibly ignorant boob from Long Island ...

HANNITY: Oh, ouch, Alec.

BALDWIN: No, no, no, you've spoken, let me talk, Sean. Cause you've been spewing your ...

HANNITY: You're a third-rate Hollywood egomaniac.

BALDWIN: You're a no-talent, ignorant fool from Long Island. You should go back to building houses in Hempstead.

LEVIN: Why was your [former] wife [Kim Basinger] so pissed off at you, anyway?

WHITMAN: Now, c'mon guys.

BALDWIN: OK. We're done. [Gets up and leaves the studio]

WHITMAN: Come back. Come back. Alec? They're gone. Alec? Alec has walked out of the studio. Alec, please come back.
