THE FACTS ON THE GROUND PROVE YOU WRONG, REALLY WRONG. The majority of Iraqis, Afghans and most other middle easterners have shown a narrow and intolerant view of the "rights" of others. No Sht sherlock... Just like many early Americans displayed intolerance towards blacks, and towards women... And I can go far back within traditional "christian" values that supported such beliefs. And our own government originally restricted the right to vote to property owners. And do you think that we've rid ourselves of narrow-minded individuals even today? Does that suggest that Americans were not capable of democratic government and thus, no revolution was justifiable in the American Colonies? Do you think bigotry and religious hatred is going to be solved by perpetuating the current totalitarian and authoritarian regimes? Women are chattels subject to unilateral and arbitrary decisions that result in beatings and death from their own husbands, fathers and even strangers.* As I mentioned, women only obtained the right to vote in this society within the last century. For the first 100 years of this country, women were denied the right to vote.. Fathers were perfectly entitled to decide who the daughters would be married off to. Do you really believe that abuse and oppression of women is solely the realm of Islam?? And what do you think brought about this change of attitude (or maybe you still think they should be treated as property)?? And do you believe that change would have occurred under a theocratic totalitarian state? What about Birth Control? Do you think that would really exist were the Catholic Church holding power over the Western world? Get a clue. The assumptions in your middle eastern model are TOTALLY WRONG and you're making an utter fool of yourself with Pollyanna-like, fairy tale projections while our soldiers die in the not-Pollyanna, not-fairy tale, intolerant, violent, ignorant and other-cultered world that is Iraq. No... it's time for YOU to catch the "clue train". Intolerance will NOT be defeated by perpetuating authoritarism and totalitarianism and permitting it to thrive unchecked. Oppressed indivuals don't choose to live in the manner that they do, they live that way because people like you are unwilling to oppose or confront the culture of oppression. You permit it to continue because you're unwilling to pay the price to do so. You're unwilling to use the same level of effort, military and violent, if necessary, that their oppressors are willing to use. In fact, it seems that you're unwilling to lift a finger to do anything about opposing oppression and tyranny in this world until it shows up on your doorstep. That's the problem here Ed.. You're unwilling to actually believe that other people deserve, or desire, the same rights and privileges that you enjoy. No.. you believe that people choose to be oppressed and actually desire it. I say they do it because they don't have any other choice. Hawk
