Yes, they were different. Back in 1962, it took my ex-husband about eight weeks to learn English at age nine. He's actually not hispanic, but he grew up in Costa Rica...his half-siblings were born there. No special molly-coddling foo-foo classes for them...Immersion. Learn or get burned. Their English is better than most who've grown up here. I never once heard them say "would of went" or "between you and I." They could spell! I had a friend whose family moved to Quebec from Hungary, finally to the States in the late '69...She spoke French, Hungarian and English - the languages of all the lands where she had lived - equally well.

Yes, fortunately for us they were.

Many kids today resent authority as well as discipline and we read about many of them in the news.

Don't touch a hair on little Johnny or Susie's head or their parents will sue you. Teachers have to take a lot of abuse from them now and didn't in our era. And yet, many teachers and coaches are now known to be predators and need to be weeded out by our school administrators. Another worry about our educational system.

I fell asleep in a 7th grade English class once, back in 1968. The teacher was in her 70's. The school was named after her husband. She was hard to hear & very boring - she frequently just read from a book in a raspy monotone.

When she saw I had zoned out, she walked over to me, raised the hard covered book over her head with both hands & blasted me on the back of my head. I ended up with a huge welt & dang near had a heart attack. I was told later that when she made contact it made a huge WHOMP like sound.

Can you imagine the reaction if that happened to a kid in 2006?

It would be like the kid hit the lottery. The settlement in the civil lawsuit would be in 7 figures.

The teacher would be arrested & fired.

The Principal would lose their job & perhaps othe heads would roll in the school Admin.

Psychologists would be brought in to council the traumatized students.

Mandatory anger management training for each teacher in the school district would be instituted.

When it happened to me I got ZERO sympathy from the Principal or my parents. As far as everyone was concerned, the punishment was completely justified. Needless to say, I was awake in her class the rest of the year.
