Cravey,

Slightly off this topic, I have not figured out the Dell motivation on the Alienware purchase. They never buy anything. My only two thoughts are to provide the financial strength to expand Alienware's position in retail distribution and the backdoor AMD connection. Neither one is too compelling a reason in my thinking, so I continue to ponder.

Dell financial results have fallen below expectations, their growth rate has slowed. Their conference calls have (apparently) become anything but a lovefest. My take is that Dell needs something to talk about - a diversion.

Joe

Cravey, on Dell/Alienware

Perhaps Alienware has some server designs just waiting to go that Dell wants to jump on.

<The Citigroup numbers are something else. Projected revenue of $5.3B for this year, an annualized number lower than Q405 sales. So they are basically saying, all the growth in the industry will be accruing to Intel for the full year. No market share expansion from Q4 levels, no ASP improvements, no nothing. What are they thinking?>

Didn't Citigroup forecast negative growth for Intel this year in the last upgrade?
AMD revenues neutral + INTC revenues negative = negative growth for the industry this year

"Dell's distribution channel and Alienware's reputation should help grow the gaming business quite dramatically in the upcoming years. It is possible that Alienware brand could also be put to good use in the high end consumer electronics market. Another minor positive for Dell is that this acquisition gives them the ability to market AMD based systems by cross promoting Alienware line at select customers."
