I had a guy I golfed with years ago who is now dead that I asked that very question of. His reply was on an amphibios landing you have no choice but to move ahead. Once the ramp drops there is no turning back. Stand and be shot, turn and run to where or move forward and hope to hell you get somewhere there is some cover. He said you are shitting yourself but you don't have any option.

Kind of simplistic and downplays the obvious heroism but he had a point.

Many, There had to be many things on their minds on that fateful day. For one, they loved their country, and were willing to die to protect it. Next, they had taken on a job, and were not going to shirk from it. Then they were part of a family that they had come to know as well as any relative, and knew that they were depending him to do his part, and there was no way he was going to let them down. Last, but far from least, they just had determination, and a lots of guts.

There is no greater thing than that a man gives his life for a friend.
