Another significant difference to the mainland is, that by far the majority of the jobs in Hawaii are in the service sector.

They don't have a lot of old factories there being vacated as production is moved to Asia.


I personally know people that have moved to Hawaii without jobs. I'm not saying that low illegal immigration is the only reason unemployment is low (and thus wages and benefits going up), I'm saying it is a contributing factor. Supply/demand. You will give me that much, won't you?

Most of the open jobs are in construction, retail, transportation, utilities, leisure, hospitality, education and health, according to the state Labor Department.
