And stalin ruled russia with an iron hand too. If nothing else the war thought expanding from local to regional, never became global and that was a good thing.
OT The thing i hate most about WW2 and Korea is that it kept Ted Williams from getting to 800 career Home Runs. Now that Baroid Bonds is approaching Aarons 755, i think about Ted and his service alot. But on the good side, think of all the fish that lived while he was in service. He was also a world class fisherman. Baroid cant fish either--steroids wont help that.

<I think both sides came to regret their mutual mis-reading of the situation.> I suppose that is the case in most cases of conflict. If one side correctly reads the situation, they might avoid the outcome. If both correctly read the situation, it would be excellent and conflict would be avoided.

Japan wouldn't have bothered bombing Pearl Harbour.

Adolf wouldn't have bothered invading Poland. Or USSR.

USA wouldn't have got into Vietnam. Or Iraq.

Japan would have unconditionally surrendered long before they did and before Hiroshima. And before Nagasaki.
