Every profession "fosters" medocrity? Far too general and inaccurate statement for me. Now if you are talking about "the profession of union management", I will agree.

Low performing units in companies? Are normally the result of one or more of the following: poor management; union control; poor training; lousy product line; small or large blip in the market; "its the economy, stupid" and perhaps a couple other reasons. My experience has been that poor management and lack of union support often led to poor training which resulted in mediocre performance by some employees.

Escalante was "not" an anomaly. There are many like him out there. But, there are far too many tenured incompetent teaachers on the school payrolls. This does not help students to achieve their objective of reaching college, let alone do basic readin, writin and rithmetic. The teacher unions will not admit to this and usually attempt to change the subject when challenged.

Basketball is basketball once you get to the high school level. The mediocre do not make the team. Period. If you switch your "metaphor" to little league where everyone gets to play, you would be more accurate. Otherwise, your premise is flawed.
