I wouldn't have expected a statement like that from you. Not only are there mediocre players, there are whole schools that are mediocre, and some that just stink- they're bad- worse than mediocre- if you've followed basketball at the high school level I would think you would know that. How else to explain the school that is ALWAYS in last place? Have you actually ever seen high school basketball? I'm serious.

I'll say this. You did a nice job of changing the subject matter in the Mercury article from the student to NBA basketball. I do know a little about basketball, even played the game.

My reading of the Mercury article is that CA is doing a lousy job of getting kids ready. Why? Teaching and counseling.
Why? They need more teachers and more counselors. Which means they need money to fund those hires.

Your appeal that Prop 13 is a central issue in problems of CA education is union propaganda.

The article did not touch the union issue. Unfortunate, because denial will continue with some members of the teaching profession.
