Defensible would have been the better word, although there was the consideration of comparative royalties paid for GSM IPR at perhaps 4X Qualcomm's half a tithe. Not going for more is the defensive part.

This is the second time that has come around. Didn't the work on the standard take place in the 3GPP work groups? Was Qualcomm mucking about in there inking (like a squid) the way forward, or not contributing enough to the stew brewing in the opposition's tent?

I've always had a suspicion that WCDMA was a briar patch into which Qualcomm pleaded most pathetically to be not thrown, but which was actually very comfy turf for them, that it was only the s-l-o-w process that was troublesome and delayed profits for themselves and the operators.
