Predicated on his having to edit if not lose some of his more controversial pictures... women and children dying it. Men on D day drowning as the landing craft did not come close enough to the beach, were deemed immoral to show to the public...
So he started his own club of photographers called Magnum..
Those who joined took pictures without censorship and sold them to whatever papers or magazines would pay for them.

It allowed more Independence from censorship and for an artist to remain true to his craft. I remember seeing some of his more famous pictures in LIFE as a child...

He was the most aggressive photo journalist there has ever been, landing on D Day with the first wave, parachuting with troops into battle. He was comparable to Ernie Pyle and some of the other war correspondents..

His coterie of friends included Hemingway,Steinbeck and others. His bedding of women is quite notorious as he was a handsome sun of a gun and very brave.. He never married as he was always at war.

It also brought cognizance as to just how many wars there have been and that it seems humankind is always at war.
