Next question would be what evolutionary purpose did they serve - why did natural selection select for these things. And most likely more speculative answers on that. Non-speculative answers would be best. What was that potential doing sitting there 149,900 years uselessly doing nothing? Some might argue, looking around at the world today, that we need a tad more intellect if we are to avoid disaster of our own making. Wisdom and intelligence are two different things. It's the former we are lacking most.
