That plaque might have been early 1900's, but most probably the sentiment came from 1846 forward....when so many from Ireland came here to escape the potato famine.... Some of mine came at that time as well. The worked hard, and eventually gathered land. One Irish ancestor (from County Down) was in NY State by 1842, before the famine...he bought land, worked hard. His daughter married the son of his friend that came from County Tyrone....the friend joined as a man in his 50's in the Union Army in the Civil War, and died because of illness brought on by conditions of War. He is buried in Alexandria VA.
