Theft is a strong word. It is clear that Microsoft has adopted technology from others. Apple sued them for copying the gui and mouse idea. Since Apple had used an idea developed at Xerox without giving credit or payment, they didn't have a leg to stand on.

"Microsoft still turns out unreliable, sorry excuses for software. Some things never change."

There is an observation among professionals that Microsoft developed software needs to be in the third generation before it is reliable and useful. Remember Windows 1 and 2? They were a good way to run solitaire, but not much more.

Word couldn't get much market share from Wordperfect until Windows 95 included printer drivers in the OS. Wordperfect had always had much better printer support than Word. Excel was struggling against Lotus in the high end and Quatro Pro in the low end. It was not until Microsoft started selling Office bundles (and then giving them a similar look and feel) that Microsoft started to dominate that space.
