How much R&D $$$ actually goes into Windows? My guess is not a lot. I'd be surprised if it was more than 10% of the R&D budget, which is still a considerable pile of cash. MSFT has an R&D philosophy that isn't predicated on profitability -- how else do you account for all that money spent with so little to show for it? There's a tremendous amount of research going on at MSFT for sure, unfortunately not a whole lot of development.
