No, I don't think that this behavior should be excused in the usual moral or legalistic sense. But, this sort of misses the point. We brought a dog home, but we don't to clean the muddy carpet or hear barking or feed it. So many people do not see the welfare and warfare states as two sides of the same coin.

James Howard Kunstler correctly notes the hypocrisy of those who drive from their suburban dwelling to a peace rally (never understanding that the trip itself requires us maintaining a police station in the middle east). I think that Kunstler's argument can be extended a few steps. The "lifestyle" we enjoy - the supposed benefits and entitlements of being an American, such as Social Security, Medicare, the vast regulatory state, the interstate highway system, farm subsidies, S&L/auto mfr/pension bailouts, etc. come at a price. Sometimes Americans seem surprised at the price. Is wiretapping MDs unconstitutional? Yes, Virginia, and so are federal farm subsidies and the Endangered Species Act.

I'm not surprised - I figure that the government has been doing these sorts of things all along, in fact I would count on it. What reason is there for the government to not do it? Keep your head down...
