this is a great article but I think a lot of detail is missing. For example I don't buy that it took msft basically 4 years (from 2000-summer 2004 when longhorn was "started over") to determine that the Longhorn approach was too complicated and they needed smaller task oriented code units.

This (to me) seems like an "oh shit" moment happened way too late in the process to fix, thats sortof common.
