I think you are right and that is an angle I'd never seen mentioned before. He is desperate to keep that from happening and the inner circle full of Bush cronies will do what they can..

Do you think Republicans have any chance of continuing to be in control if the following happens between now and November?
housing worsens
Iraq worsens
Republicans distance themselves from the administration
GDP drops to under 1% in the summer and unemployment remain near current levels
stock market sells off big in summer but rebounds sharply in the weeks leading into election day to make new all time highs in the Dow
