Reaction to a quake might be illogical, but I wouldn't defend illogical response to any emergency. It just doesn't make sense to act on emotion- you just aren't going to get the best planning- not about earthquakes, not about hurricanes, not about tornados, and not about terrorism. Your post is essentially trying to defend the irrational response to a tragedy- I don't support that on any coast, and in response to any tragedy/emergency.

Every region has natural disasters and they are horrific. Some are excaserbated by man's relationship to his environment--levies, building on the side of mountains and on the water etc. When something goes wrong we react as a locality, region and nation and try to solve the problem. Katrina got away from govt because of the floods/levies not the hurricane. It was an infrastructure issue more than anything else.
But 9/11 was not a natural disaster. We were attacked and although certain areas of the country are either better targets or more vulnerable the lesson of 9/11 should be clear to all americans. Bush became a leader in the days after 9/11 but squandered the good feeling on iraq for better or worse. I think libs, mods and cons will agree on this point.
But now almost 5 years after 9/11, americans have put the even in "perspective" or so they think until the next attack that is. Folks who dont understand that we are at war (not iraq but the entire islamofascist thing) will be shocked the next time like the british were when appeasement didnt work. Because what the left is supporting is a kind of appeasement buying into the mantra that if we leave bin alone, he wont bother us. But deep down they must know he will attack again, if not now, later. Just like the deficits they now whine about. And a significant part of the blame imo, goes to this admin who screewed up the war by either mismanaging iraq or taking us there in the first place.
